We played Sonic Colors Ultimate, a second life for the game Wii

Once is not custom in these pandemic times, it's through a streaming game session that Sega gave us the opportunity to try Sonic Colors Ultimate last week . For half an hour, we were able to try us at the first levels of the game and see how this new version turns.

In Sonic Colors Ultimate , Dr. Eggman tries to show white paw by opening his interstellar park in which massive attractions are located. Although impressed in the right sense of the word, Sonic and Tails can not help but find the suspicious thing given the precedents of the weapon of the naughty moustachu. Quickly, the two heroes will discover that the planet where the amusement park in question is populated by creatures named WISP. And if it turns out that if the sworn enemy of Sonic wants to exploit the powers of the latter, the hedgehog pressed will be able to do it too. With their consent of course.

Infinity Wisps

In addition to the traditional Sonic capabilities (speed boost, remote attack, etc.), the hero can also take advantage of the capabilities conferred on him by WISP. Depending on the color of the WISP that Sonic releases, the latter gets specific powers. The green WISPs allow for example to Sonic to turn into laser (the corner of the radius is determined by the player) and to bounce back on certain surfaces. Yellow Wisp give Sonic's ability to turn into a forest and cross other types of surfaces. White Wisp serve as for them to benefit from a speed boost. And there are only a few examples of WISP that the hedgehog impatient will cross during his adventure. The latter, combined with the Level Design of Sonic Colors, bring the variety welcome to the gaming experience.

As the tradition does, the levels of Sonic Colors Ultimate also benefit from good replayability. And this for many reasons. First, speed and speed running enthusiasts can try to improve their stopwatch on different levels. Players who prefer to finish their 100% games will be able to enjoy the level design at several levels of the title developed by Sonic Team and redo each area several times to find everything and see everything. And to succeed in unblocking everything, it will be necessary to use the WISPs mentioned above.

Gotta Go Faster

Streaming game requires, we have not been able to take advantage of the 4K resolution and truly stopped on the improvements to the game graphics. On the other hand, it was possible to try the game in 60 fps. And for a title like Sonic Colors, this jump made by the framerate is obviously a big plus (the game turned in 30 fps on Wii and it will always be the case on switch). The sensation of speed is indeed there and appreciable. As always with the Sonic in 3D, the impression of loss of control of the Blue Blur can sometimes be felt. But during our play session, she was not too present. And the alternation between sequences with a 3D gameplay (camera behind Sonic) and those with a 2D gameplay (Side Scrolling with camera on the side), idea taken by Sonic Generations, works well.

On Wii, Sonic Colors had received laudatory comments regarding his artistic direction and his music. In this remastered version, these compliments are always appropriate at first glance. The world of the game is extremely colorful (fortunately given its title) and it has a festive side that is not unpleasant (we will go on the cinematic scenes with the engine of the game that took a little blow of old). And the resulting music to which the Sonic games of the 3D era have accustomed us are very present. It emerges from the game the particular atmosphere of the Sonic games, atmosphere that is not found in other games. In passing, special mention to fun ads made at the microphone of the park by Dr. Eggman during levels. For whom is not completely hermetic to the world of the blue hedgehog, it is easy to dive into the world of Sonic Colors.
